Taiwan eSIM: Island-Wide Data From Taipei to Kaohsiung and Beyond

Your China Airlines flight is descending into Taoyuan and you're already pulling up MRT directions to Taipei Main Station, checking your National Palace Museum timed-entry QR, and translating the Mandarin menu your guesthouse host just messaged. With an eSIMno Taiwan plan installed before takeoff, your phone connects the moment you switch off airplane mode at the gate — no SIM kiosk queue, no passport handover, no activation drama.

How to Get Your Taiwan eSIM

  1. Pick your Taiwan data plan
Choose from 1GB to 20GB options based on your trip length. A 10-day loop through Taipei, Tainan, and Hualien typically needs 5-10GB for maps, translation, and booking apps.
  2. Install over WiFi before your flight
Scan the QR code at home the night before departure. The eSIM profile loads in under 2 minutes and sits dormant until you activate it — no data charges while it waits.
  3. Activate after landing at Taoyuan
Once your aircraft reaches the gate and the cabin crew clears phone use, switch off airplane mode. Your eSIM connects to Chunghwa's network within 30 seconds — faster than the seatbelt sign goes off.
  4. Set eSIMno as your data line
Open Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data and select your eSIMno plan. Keep your home SIM active for voice so incoming calls reach you without roaming charges.
  5. Start navigating immediately
By the time you clear immigration and reach the Taoyuan Airport MRT platform, Google Maps is already loading your route to Taipei Main Station (35 minutes, around NT$160). No kiosk detour, no passport scan, no activation wait.

Traveler Tips

  • Download the Taiwan Railway e-booking app before departure — seat reservations for the HSR Taipei–Kaohsiung route (90 minutes, around NT$1,490) sell out on weekends and holidays, and the app needs data to confirm your QR ticket.
  • EasyCard works on MRT, buses, convenience stores, and YouBike stations island-wide. Top up at any 7-Eleven or Family Mart — the clerk scans your card and adds credit in seconds, no Mandarin required.
  • Night markets accept cash almost exclusively. Withdraw NT$ from 7-Eleven ATMs (Chunghwa Bank network, NT$100 fee) before heading to Shilin or Raohe so you're not hunting for machines mid-browse.
  • Taroko Gorge entry permits for the Zhuilu Old Trail must be applied for online 7-30 days in advance. The National Park Service site loads slowly on hotel WiFi — use your eSIM data for a smoother submission.
  • Temples like Longshan Temple allow photography in most areas but prohibit flash. Check Google reviews for current etiquette notes before entering, especially during prayer hours.
  • Typhoon season runs June through October. Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau app (CWB) pushes real-time alerts — keep notifications on so you're not caught off-guard by a sudden transit shutdown.

Why Data Matters Across Taiwan

Taiwan runs on mobile convenience. The High Speed Rail app lets you book a Taipei–Taichung seat (47 minutes, around NT$700) from your phone, skip the ticket counter, and scan the QR code directly at the gate. The Taipei Metro's real-time arrival board syncs with Google Maps, so you know whether to walk or run for the next Red Line train at Taipei 101/World Trade Center Station. Uber and Taiwan Taxi both operate island-wide, but surge pricing spikes hard after midnight in Ximending — checking both apps simultaneously requires data, and the price gap can hit NT$150 on a 10-minute ride.

Translation is non-negotiable outside Taipei. Tainan's historic temples post signage in Traditional Chinese only, and even major night markets assume local fluency. Google Translate's camera mode turns a handwritten beef noodle menu into English in 2 seconds — try that over a crowded vendor's shoulder without mobile data. Sun Moon Lake's Shuishe Pier ticket booth sells paper passes, but the ferry schedule changes seasonally; the Nantou Bus app shows real-time departures that the printed timetable doesn't. Jiufen's Old Street closes its bus queues early on weekends — Google Maps crowd data helps you leave Taipei by 8 AM to beat the 11 AM crush.

Connectivity stays strong even in remote areas. Hualien's Qingshui Cliff viewpoint sits 20 km from the nearest town, but Chunghwa's 4G coverage holds steady for sharing photos or calling a taxi back. The Alishan Forest Railway runs limited daily departures; the official app shows remaining seats and lets you book on the platform if you missed the advance window. With an eSIMno plan for Taiwan, your data works from Taoyuan's airport MRT platform to Kenting's southernmost beaches — no roaming toggles, no carrier switching, no coverage gaps.

About Taiwan & What Travelers Come For

Gateway Cities

Taipei anchors most itineraries. The capital's MRT network connects 131 stations across 6 lines, and the Taoyuan Airport MRT delivers arrivals to Taipei Main Station in 35 minutes. Kaohsiung, Taiwan's second-largest city, offers a quieter port-town vibe with the Pier-2 Art Center, Lotus Pond temples, and a light rail circling the harbor. Taichung sits mid-island, serving as the gateway to Sun Moon Lake and the art-focused National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

What Travelers Come For

Taipei 101's 89th-floor observatory draws crowds year-round, and the basement food court rivals any night market for variety. The National Palace Museum houses 700,000 Chinese artifacts — timed-entry tickets sell out by mid-morning on weekends. Jiufen's lantern-lit alleyways inspired Studio Ghibli imagery and pack tight on Saturdays. Taroko Gorge's marble cliffs and suspension bridges require a day trip minimum from Hualien. Alishan's sunrise viewpoint over a sea of clouds is a bucket-list moment best caught at 5 AM after an overnight stay. Kenting National Park offers Taiwan's warmest beaches and scooter-friendly coastal roads.

When to Visit

Spring (March–May) brings mild temperatures and cherry blossoms in Alishan. Autumn (September–November) offers clear skies and comfortable hiking weather. Summer peaks with domestic tourists and typhoon risk; winter stays mild in the south but chilly in Taipei. Lunar New Year (late January–February) sees everything shut for a week — book trains and hotels months ahead if your dates overlap.

Getting Around Taiwan

Airport Transfers

Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) handles most international traffic. The Taoyuan Airport MRT runs every 15 minutes to Taipei Main Station (35 minutes, around NT$160). Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA) sits inside the city and connects to the Brown Line MRT in under 5 minutes. Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) links to the city center via the Red Line MRT (20 minutes, around NT$35).

Public Transit

The High Speed Rail (HSR) connects Taipei to Kaohsiung in 90 minutes with stops at Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, and Tainan. Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) covers slower regional routes including the scenic east coast line through Hualien and Taitung. Taipei's MRT runs from 6 AM to midnight, with fares ranging NT$20–65 depending on distance. EasyCard works on MRT, buses, YouBike, convenience stores, and even some taxis.

Rideshare & Inter-City Options

Uber operates in Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Taichung; Taiwan Taxi covers areas Uber doesn't reach. Scooter rentals require an International Driving Permit with motorcycle endorsement — Kenting and Hualien are popular rental zones. Long-distance buses run by Kuo-Kuang and Ubus connect cities the HSR skips, including Jiufen and Sun Moon Lake, with fares typically under NT$500 for 3-4 hour routes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Install the eSIM profile at home over WiFi the night before your flight — it takes under 2 minutes and sits dormant until you need it. After your aircraft lands at Taoyuan and taxis to the gate, switch off airplane mode. By the time you're walking toward the Airport MRT platform, your phone is already pulling directions to Taipei Main Station.
Yes. The eSIMno plan is data-only, so your home SIM stays active for incoming calls and texts. Set eSIMno as your data line in Settings → Cellular, and your home line handles voice. For outgoing calls, use WhatsApp, FaceTime, or LINE over your eSIM data to avoid roaming charges from your home carrier.
Absolutely. Chunghwa's 4G LTE network covers the entire island — from Kaohsiung's Pier-2 Art Center to Hualien's Taroko Gorge entrance and Alishan's forest railway stations. You won't need to switch plans or toggle roaming settings when traveling between cities.
A 7-10 day itinerary covering Taipei, a day trip to Jiufen, and an overnight in Hualien typically uses 5-8GB with moderate maps, translation, and social media. Heavy video uploaders or remote workers should consider 10GB or more. Night market browsing and booking apps use minimal data; streaming video uses the most.
You can purchase an additional eSIMno plan from any WiFi connection — hotel lobby, café, or convenience store hotspot. The new profile installs in minutes, and you're back online without visiting a carrier store or swapping physical SIMs.
Most iPhones from the XS onward and recent Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, and other Android devices support eSIM. Check your phone's settings for a 'Cellular Plans' or 'Mobile Data' option that shows 'Add eSIM' — if it's there, you're compatible. Carrier-locked phones may need unlocking before departure.
Taiwan rewards travelers who arrive connected. The Taoyuan Airport Express runs every 15 minutes from Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to Taipei Main Station, but confirming your hotel's precise MRT exit on Google Maps while rolling your bag through arrivals beats guessing from a static sign. Night markets like Shilin and Raohe don't post English menus — Google Translate's camera mode turns unfamiliar characters into dinner decisions in seconds. With an eSIMno Taiwan plan activated before your flight, data is live the moment you taxi to the gate. Beyond Taipei, connectivity stays strong. Kaohsiung's light rail loops the harbor district, and real-time schedules on the official app help you time the sunset at Pier-2 Art Center. Sun Moon Lake ferries run fixed routes but mobile tickets save the paper queue at Shuishe Pier. Jiufen's narrow alleyways get crowded on weekends — checking Google Maps crowd estimates before the bus ride up lets you time arrival for thinner foot traffic. Hualien's Taroko Gorge requires a mobile entry permit for certain trails, and the application page only loads reliably on mobile data, not the spotty guesthouse WiFi. Taiwan's eSIM-friendly infrastructure means most modern iPhones and Android devices activate within minutes. Chunghwa Telecom provides the backbone for eSIMno plans, delivering 4G LTE across cities, mountain towns, and coastal highways alike. Whether you're tapping an EasyCard at Taipei 101's MRT entrance, booking a high-speed rail seat from Taichung to Zuoying, or calling an Uber from Ximending at midnight, your data works. Buy once, use everywhere the HSR and local trains reach — the plan covers the entire island, not just the capital.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does my voice plan come with a phone number I can keep?
Your voice plan has its own phone number, and it is issued in France - so you get a French number even when the plan itself is for another country. It is not a permanent number and you cannot keep it: it changes roughly every 30 days. Voice plans also cannot be topped up, so when the plan ends you buy a new one, with a new eSIM to install and a different number. Please treat the number as something that belongs to the trip, not to you - if you need a number that stays yours for years, a voice eSIM is not the right product.
When should I set up my eSIM?
A Wi-Fi connection is required to install your eSIM, so we recommend setting it up before you leave home. Activation can happen later, either right before departure or after you land at your destination - but the initial QR scan needs Wi-Fi.
What should I do if I see a 'No network' message after activating my eSIM?
If you see a 'No network' message after activation, try these steps in order: (1) Toggle airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off. (2) Confirm data roaming is enabled for the eSIM line. (3) Manually select a network in cellular settings. (4) Restart your phone. If the issue continues, contact eSIMno support via WhatsApp or email.
Can I share data from my eSIM with someone else's phone?
Yes, through Personal Hotspot. Activate hotspot on your phone, share the password, and the other device connects to your data. Data used by connected devices counts toward your eSIM plan, so monitor usage to avoid running out faster than expected.
Can I switch the eSIM to a different phone after activation?
Generally no. Once an eSIM is activated on a device, it's tied to that device. If you switch phones, you'll need to install a new eSIM. Some carriers offer eSIM transfer features, but eSIMno plans don't currently support transfer between devices.
Will I get notifications when my data is running low?
Yes. eSIMno sends email and push notifications when you've used 50%, 80%, and 100% of your data allowance. You can also check usage anytime in Profile > My eSIMs or in your phone's cellular settings to track consumption in real time.
What makes eSIMno different from other eSIM services?
eSIMno offers eSIM plans for 170+ countries on reliable local partner networks. The price at checkout is all you pay - no activation fee or roaming surcharge. Your eSIM arrives by email within minutes and only starts when it connects to a network at your destination; most plans can be topped up in Profile > My eSIMs, and if you haven't installed your eSIM, you can get a refund within 14 days.
Can I use the eSIM for my smartwatch?
Some smartwatches (Apple Watch Cellular, Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE) support eSIM, but they typically require a plan from your home carrier rather than a travel eSIM. eSIMno plans are designed for phones and tablets - check device compatibility before purchase if you intend to use a wearable.
Can I make phone calls or send SMS?
It depends on the plan you choose. Most eSIMno plans are data-only: on those you cannot place regular calls or send SMS from the eSIM line, but messaging and calling apps work normally over the data connection - WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal and Google Meet. We also offer voice plans in selected destinations, and on those calling and SMS work from the eSIM line itself, which comes with its own French phone number and unlimited calling across Europe. Every plan card shows which type it is, so check the plan type before you buy. If you are looking at a voice plan, please also read who you can call and text, and what happens to the phone number - both are explained in their own questions below.
Can I extend my eSIM plan validity?
The validity of a package that is already running cannot be extended, but you can top up: a top-up adds a new package with its own data AND its own validity days. Packages run one at a time - the top-up waits in queue and activates automatically when your current package ends (data used up or days expired), and its own days start counting from that moment. In practice this keeps you connected longer, even though the current package's own end date does not move.
What happens when my voice or unlimited plan ends? Can I renew it?
These plans cannot be topped up or renewed. Once the allowance is used or the validity period ends, the line closes. To keep going you buy a new plan, and that gives you a new eSIM to install - on a voice plan it also gives you a new phone number. This is how our supplier provides voice and unlimited plans, so we would rather tell you up front than let you expect an automatic renewal that will not happen. We never renew these plans and charge you without asking.
Can I use the eSIM to make video calls?
Yes - apps like FaceTime, WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams all work over your eSIM data. Video calls use about 200-400 MB per hour depending on quality, so factor that into your plan choice if you make long calls regularly.
